Had a pile of stock laying around.
1800's cast iron tractor wheel
1900's steel tractor wheel
Bunch of transmission gears from motocycles..

What ya gonna do..

I decided to build a table.

This is my first time using a tig welder so been taking my time.
The front side was brazed together to get to contrast of the silicon bronze against the cast iron and steel gears.
The rear was then filly welded using 308SS since that is what I had on hand and given the mix of materials seemed like the safest bet.

Next up was the need for a shaft to be installed into what used to be the bore the axle rode in for the table top, this will bear the weight of the table and carry it to ground on the 1.5" OD tubing I plan to use as the main spar between the table top and bottom. The legs will run at an angle from the top to bottom (Base is smaller ID than the top) and are there for stability not to really carry all the weight of the table.

It has been over 115 in the garage this last week.
Project on hold till after the heatwave.

Next up is the building of the load bearing spindle which will carry the weight of the top down to the ground.

Then I have to fit the 4" column (for looks) to the top since the bar stock I am using for the spindle is a little too thin 1.5" not beefy enough.

This was the spindle I built in lieu of the axle shaft.

Pretty happy with these welds. The table flange rests against the gear (think of the table top sitting ON the gear).
Still playing with materials, one weld was the bronze, the other (small bead) was 308 stainless and the large blob to the left was 70s rod. Just for grins.

Finally got cool enough to spend some time in the garage tonight.

Got the main pillar fitted to the table top.

Might actually get to burn some rod tomorrow.

Close up of the actual fitment, mind you this was done with a sazall so not perfect but suitable for this application.

This is what will be the base, the OD of the pipe matches the OD of the hub which is why it was chosen.

Finally done, all that is left to fab is the top.
Going to make it out of expanded mesh, ran out of gas so have to wait till it's refilled before i can finish.

I have to say, I'd expect it took a little while to "gear up" for that job...

Nice work and very creative. I like it. I would never guess you were a first time tig welder. :D

Going to make an expanded metal mesh top first, if I dont like the look will make a 1/2" tempered glass top for it.

I thought about that but it would make the table far too top heavy and cost about 400 dollars for just the volume of gears needed to make it look right.

Will most definitely be posting up pictures of the finished product once the top is completed. Got my first taste of trying to TIG paint prepped metal banding. Did not know it was painted since looked like bare metal. :o
Took a while for the smoke to clear.

Have some metal prep to do tonight...

lexan very light compared to glass,cleanup easy for those spills,easy to fab and polish edges,sand smooth and then small flame torch to seal /clear edges.

Finally done with the build, completed the concentric rings for supporting the glass top which is on order.
Decided against using the steel mesh and figured if going to use something clear might as well with tempered glass 1/2 thick should be plenty strong for the application.

Found some parts and materials left over so made a mascot for the table.

beware metal scratchs break surface tension on tempered glass and then can shatter( think side glass in a car (crumble)
rubber mounts for tempered for safety
safety glass or polycarbonate might be a better choice
