This is another one of those strange projects we seem to be involved with a lot...a Sit n' Spin. It's a dining table on a turntable floor and if you grab the table, the whole thing will spin around. If you remember the old carnival ride "Tilt A Whirl" it's similar to that. You might ask your self "Why in the world would anyone want something like this" My standard answer on projects like this..."I have no idea."

The turntable floor was a 9'- 6" diameter and was built in 2 halves. The framing was 1 1/2 x 2 steel rectangle tube and decked with 3/4 SkidGuard plywood. The first picture shows the underside of one half. The casters are bolted on and the outer plywood frame on the side is to hold a bendy birch skirt that was laminated with black formica.

(If anyone ever finds themselves having to build an odd shaped or circular platform, this is very important and it will keep you from tearing your hair out....Always cut the top plywood first and lay out the framing to match the cutout. Never, ever build the frame first, it will never line up. Trust me on that.)

The second picture is my pivot point. The pivot had to bolt to the floor and support the table top, but the table had to float over the platform so it would turn. I used 1/4" plate for the floor and deck plate, the deck plate held a 1-7/8 pillow block which is what the platform pivoted on, and a 1-7/8ths drill rod for the inner table support.

The third picture shows a closeup of the lower part of the pivot. The welded on nuts on the upper plate joined the two halves of the platform in the middle.

Here's what it wound up looking like. it's just about finished here, except for a few upholstered cover pieces on the ends of the seat. That's me in the pictures, in the green shirt.

This thing also got entered into some kind of design competition, but I don't know how it did.

I'm assuming the twisted logic is, lay out the food on the table, and the guests can rotate themselves around the courses. A "lazy susan" in reverse.

Nice work, as always, but a baffling concept.

I think that was the original plan, but I'm not sure anymore. The safe deposit box tables were part of this job, the whole area was supposed to be a kind of banquet center but that whole idea got dropped about halfway through. Now it's a break area/work area. It's one of those modern workspaces where people lounge around playing games, rollerblade, do some work.....I don't understand it myself, but I suppose I'm from a different era. As long as they're happy and the check cashes, that's my motto!

I can make you one if you really want it. Of course, I'd have to come down there to make sure it was installed correctly. About a month on site, all expenses paid, should just about cover it!
