I know doing like 304 exhaust you need to back purge but just for practice if I don't purge will effect the outside weld orcis it mainly for the inside? I want to just grab some tube and practice on

if your going to practise tube, then back purge. you need to know if your penetrating etc so you need a clean inside bead.
plus you need to practise purge setups.

to practise without purge, just pad beads on a thick plate.

Padding beads on a thick plate is way different.t than trying lap or butt joints on thin exhaust tube. But ok I will just practice with purge

You can practice without purging. Shoot, even some “high end” exhaust systems don’t purge on stainless. Makes me angry, but that’s how some folks roll.

If you have a clean butted fitment, you can practice without filler too. Lower your amps and get accustomed to moving and controlling your puddle. I like to use pulse in these scenarios.
