Hi guys, I’m gutted to see my headstock at the V mount area cracked. Unfortunately it’s caused by a poor (or lack of) contact between headstock and bed. As the bolts are tightened it spreads the v groove apart!

I digress, I want to try and aluminium bronze braze it.

After cleaning and grooving, should I be grinding down to the base of the crack or just enough of a groove to take a bead of filler?

I have a penetrant / crack detector kit which I intend to use.

Thanks in advance.

I’d use a nickel rod since that component is cast iron. The issue will be afterwards; the fitment to the bedway will be very distorted. Might be worth a good scraping to get the headstock to sit better on the ways.
