I have a cast steel clutch hub. need to build up the surface w/machinable tig rod. then machine a snap ring ( 0.065 ) groove into the weld.
I only have experience w/ER70s-6 rod. which I found is very difficult to machine...
ROD recommendations would be helpful.

I’m surprised you struggle with ERS6 as it’s very commonly used to build up and reclaim heavy equipment eyes. It’s a very common MIG wire and nothing particularly unique about it that I’ve ever seen. It grinds away, flap discs cut it, and high speed steel rips though it like butter.

Any more details on your challenge?

what cj said.
ER70S-6 mild steel welding wire is machinable because it produces smooth beads that require minimal post-weld grinding.

Yup.. Sounds odd as ER70 is basically a low carbon, mild steel and should not be hard to machine.

Perhaps prior experience was using it to build up a high carbon steel or cast-iron that increased the carbon content and hardened the resulting weld? That would make machining difficult..

Bye, Arno.

for me, if i don't know what steel it is, use 312 rod. i have absolutely no idea on how it machines.
tweak it until it breaks
