Vulcan helmet flashing at start of weld

My Vulcan arcsafe welding helmet flashes me half of the time whenever I start a weld. This is the second one I have bought since I thought the first one was defective, but it seems to be the design of the helmet. I’m a novice welder. Ive been been trying to “restore” a rusty jeep for the last year and have been doing a lot of sheet metal work. The flash would not be a problem if I was welding long beads, but since it’s sheet metal, I have to start and stop constantly, which means I’m flashed constantly. I’ve replaced the batteries, cleaned the batteries and the light sensor with no luck. When I got the 2nd helmet it was good for the first day then started flashing. I started out with the cheapest helmet from harbor freight and it never did this. Has anyone had this problem? Also what are some good name brand auto darkening helmets with good visibility that won’t completely brake the bank<$400

Miller, Viking, Optrel all make very good auto darkening helmets.
Your distance from the work may be the issue, or you may have too much ambient light from behind you or interfering with the sensor. If you’re under the car, close the garage door when you weld and see if that helps. If you’re outside under the car, I’d wager on sunlight causing the issue.

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I did play around with the settings and it didn't help.
As for ambient lighting, I tested in low light conditions and it also didn’t make it stop. Maybe there is still too much ambient lighting for that helmet. Still, the cheap Chicago electric helmet did not flash me in my normal lighting conditions, which is weird. Regardless I’m stepping away from all safety gear from harbor freight and going with the name brands who have a lot more r&d. Viking helmet is on the way.

You also need to test the distance your head/helmet is from the arc. If you’re too far away, the sensors don’t react quickly enough until the arc is full on.

Hard to say what up with the HF helmet. I would have guessed the sensitivity adjustment is not correct but obviously you tried that. The guys here will probably scould me for saying this, but you don't need a $400 helmet for hobby work. I am currently using an Arccaptain Hyperview helmet ($89). 1/1/1/1 true color rating. Works great for me. I am not promoting this brand just saying there are a lot of less expensive helmets that work well. I also have a Yeswelder goggle type shield that is also 1/1/1/1 true color. It works well too for when a full helmet is in the way.
I suggest you might find something on Amazon and try it. It's easy to return..especially if you happen to have Prime.

i think your right on the money.
i have my moderately expensive one (entry level speedglas) and a cheap chain store budget one as a spare. they both work fine.

small tip with any solar panel helmet, leave them out in the sun. inside a moderate sunny workshop is fine.
don't go putting it in a box, in a locker, or face down. let the solar panel get some light.
maybe the electronics is a bit wonky because its not charged up fully.

I have the same helmet. Had to return it twice to HF before getting one that would keep working correctly. The first one started the flash issue after about 2 weeks. The second one lasted about 3 days. The one I am using now, is about 3 years old and still working great till the battery dies. That happens about once a year or so. I did some research after the second one started to flash me. Found that a number of folks had the same problem with that helmet. Showed that info to the worker in the HF store, and got a replacement with no fuss. I am suprised that the problem hasn't been corrected in 3 years time.
Once you get a good one, you will love it. I upgraded from a POS Neverlast TIG welder, to a Miller Dynasty 300 Package. Still using the HF Vulcan helmet. Have looked at the more expensive helmets, but don't see them as 'better'.
