Re: Hand Feeding Tig Wire - Practice the Right Motion
I also use the 2013 technique, I feed the wire to the puddle, instead of stopping then feeding. It's the only way I can keep up on alum. Because you dip so much. Have only been tig welding for little over a year now. Filler hand still freezes up for that first rod, then I get into a rhythm and thing...

Re: aluminum troubleshooting
I run a lot of aluminum mig at work hopefully I can help. Your on the right on to preheat your parts to deal with the cold start issues. I use a miller 252 with a spool gun as well as a 350p with a aluma pro. Our spool guns run the best with a mix gas of 25% he 75% argon lots less soot than straight...

I've not welded it yet, but found THIS today, in a vessel head. GEDC1225.JPG GEDC1229.JPG Waiting on information from engineering. There's a cause for this, and a fix that must be applied before I repair it. Steve S I have to tell you I'm getting a little jealous. Your job looks and sounds like fun...

Re: Third time to TIG(Critique)
As the others have said not too bad, especially as your fairly new to it. I agree with getting some lanthanated tungsten I prefer the 2%. I am no ace at tig, but I'm a far cry from where I was a year ago. Doing the Alum. drill helped me tons made me a better welder because it shows you where it went...

Will do! The guy I'm doing this for did offer to pay for it... maybe I'll charge him half the cost of the rod if it turns from a hopefully easy job into a nightmare. And it just might now that I've said that

Thanks for the info. Some good stuff in there. I ended up ordering a pound of the 4145. Just to be on the safe side, ended up around $55 but I didn't want to need it and not have any. Doing jobs on the side, trying to get some feelers out to see of I can make a go on my own. Don't want crappy work r...

Re: Which rod to use
Thanks for the heads up. I use that stuff at work to clean up our drain pans after leak checking them. They only allow two departments to use the stuff cause like you said it's pretty nasty. We use gloves and respirators the whole shebang. Generally no welding needs to be done after because the pans...

Re: GRILL GRATE
316 SS is supposed to be have better corrosion resistance than the 304 SS. Use quite a bit of both for drain pans at work. The high end customers go with the 316. After seeing lots of older units in the field for our application don't see much difference. But for a grill grate I'd probably go for th...

Do you have a web address for Champion? I did a Google search and didn't see anything for passivation equipment. Re: Passavation and Pickling of Stainless?
We use a Champion passivator at work. Quite a bit more heavy duty than the surfox. Tried one of those, they tended to go through the pads rather quickly, and the electrode was a lot smaller. My compamy got a big job making HVAC units for a micro chip company, to supply the air for clean rooms. Needl...

I've welded plenty of beer cans with my inverter machine using a 3/32 sharpened to a sharp point. Biggest problem I've had is a getting some arc wander but that goes away at about 10-15 amps

Nice work man! I'm fairly new to tig welding been doing it for a year off and on. Wish I could tig at that pace. But work is a 99% mig place. Get to tig on occasion, but mainly at home. I totally agree with coldman. I bought a dynasty 200dx from my LWS used about a year ago. I think it would solve a lot of the problems ...

Not all that good my shop stopped using that. Our solution was PAM. ;) just needs a good wipe with acetone before any painting. Re: Gas mix
Back in my school day from memory we were told that the addition of a little oxygen in the Agroshield Lite and Universal helped stablise the arc or some such thing. I find it a bit weird though because one of the contaminants we want to keep out of the weld pool is oxygen. Maybe someone out there i...
